Elevating Your Sex Design Game: Essential Tips for Interior Designers

Updated: Aug 22

This blog post came to life after I hilariously fumbled a question during my chat with Darla from the Designed by Wingnut Social podcast. Whoopsie doodle, lol! So here’s the scoop for all of you eager to elevate your sex design game! 🌟

Designing spaces that cater to intimate and carnal experiences requires a unique set of skills and sensitivities. If you’re an interior designer ready to explore this specialized niche, here are three fundamental guidelines to elevate your work and connect wholeheartedly with your badass soulmates.

1. Understand and Respect Your Clients’ Boundaries

Before diving into projects focused on romance, it’s crucial to contemplate and align your values with the type of work you want to undertake. Designing spaces for couples, throuples, or poly families involves understanding their unique needs and preferences, which are deeply personal and sensitive.

  • Self-Reflection: Take time to assess your comfort level with discussing and working on projects that involve sexual pleasure and intimacy. This self-awareness ensures that you only take on projects where you can provide genuine, respectful service.

  • Client Comfort: Recognize that clients will share their intimate lives with you, often under the protection of NDAs. Your approach should be compassionate, respectful, and non-judgmental to build trust and ensure successful project outcomes.

2. Do Thorough Research and Develop a Clear Process

Since each client’s needs are unique, your design process must be adaptable and well-researched.

  • Educate Yourself: Study various relationship dynamics and preferences to better understand the diverse needs of your clients. Familiarize yourself with different aspects of intimacy and how they influence design. Whether designing a custom bed with a cage for pet play or a bathroom for voyeurism and watersports, it’s just another Tuesday for me. If this isn't your vibe, don't market to the different and adventurous.

  • Create Policies: Develop clear policies and procedures tailored to this niche. This includes understanding the appropriate materials, finishes, and furnishings for erotic spaces, from luxury to more functional solutions.

  • Build a Knowledgeable Network: Collaborate with builders, suppliers, and artisans who are also comfortable and experienced in this field. This ensures that every aspect of the project, from design to execution, aligns with your client's desires.

3. Foster Confidence and Communication

Success in this niche requires not only skill but also confidence and open communication.

  • Confidence Building: Confidence comes from education and a firm commitment to your niche. Embrace your role as a designer specializing in intimate spaces, and don’t be afraid to showcase your expertise.

  • Network and Market: Build a network of like-minded professionals and engage in marketing strategies that reflect your unique specialization. Your confidence will shine through in your interactions, both with clients and in promotional materials.

  • Enjoy the Process: Despite the inherent challenges, remember to have fun! Embrace the taboo aspects with enthusiasm and creativity. Your passion will translate into more innovative and effective designs.

Bonus Tip: Embrace Your Unique Path

Confidence is key in carving out your niche in the design world. Speak your truth, stay true to your purpose, and don’t let others’ opinions deter you from pursuing your passion for intimate interiors. Your dedication and unique approach will set you apart as a leader in this evolving field.

I hope this post has given you some valuable insights and ideas to help you embrace this niche within the interior design world. Dive in and let your creativity shine! #BeBadass
